Apple Watch 3 announced with cellular built in – meaning you don't need to carry your iPhone with you

Apple has just unveiled the latest version of the Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch series 3 has cellular connectivity built-in, so you can call people, browse the web and use internet-connected apps independently of your phone.

You can use Maps on the go, stream songs and access Siri, directly on the watch.

It's also waterproof and available in a range of colours, including silver, grey and rose gold. It's coming out later this month, on 22 September.

In a demo, Apple showed a user take a phone call on the Apple Watch 3, in the middle of a lake.

"This has been our vision since the beginning," said Jeff Williams, who runs the Apple Watch.

"You can go for a run and still be connected. You can leave your phone while you go to the beach. You can receive an important call with just your watch, and the number is the same number as your iPhone.

"The apps you rely on like Messages just work, and Siri is at your beck and call whenever you want. [...] And third party apps like WeChat work over cellular as well. Coming next month, cellular is going to change the way we listen to music, because with Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple Music, you can stream 40 million songs on your wrist."

Preorders for the new Apple Watch open on 15 September, and it will start shipping on 22 September.

WatchOS 4, the software powering the device, will be available to all Apple Watch users from 19 September.
