On 21 December 1989 Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceau?escu was overthrown from government by a revolution of the people.
Having fled the country, the Communist leader was captured and executed along with his wife on genocide charges in the aftermath of the Romanian Revolution.
Violent clashes between the public, supported by the army, and the secret police took place over a week-long period.
This British Pathe newsreel contains images from the revolution as well as a report from BBC journalist John Simpson as he shelters from gunfire.
