An HIV-positive man suing one council for unfair dismissal has been made the deputy mayor's escort for another.

David Morgan, from Ilford, says Haringey sacked him because he is gay and HIV positive. The council is contesting his claim. Last month in Independent London he accused Haringey of delaying the case.

Now he has been appointed to assist John Fairley-Churchill in his duties as Redbridge's deputy mayor. Mr Morgan said: 'I am very proud. There is a lot of contempt for people with HIV and it is nice to see Redbridge is prepared to take this positive step.'

But he emphasised that he had taken the job to support the Labour councillor and not to campaign on Aids matters.
