Sir: I am pleased to hear that in the future MPs will have to take the oath before giving evidence ("Tory minister does the decent thing", 12 December).

In the magistrates' courts in which I sat for many years it was a point of etiquette that witnesses took the oath before telling a string of lies. It is pleasing to see that extension of this principle.
