MAY I remind Simon Tyszko (Letters, 26 July) that there are many reasons for needing a liver transplant, such as Wilson's disease or autoimmune hepatitis, in which alcohol plays no part. There are far too few livers available. How does he think patients feel when the liver which could save their lives is given to someone likely to damage it by drinking? Prof Neuberger is being realistic, not moralistic, in suggesting alcoholic patients should sign the pledge.
