In terms of importance, Vladimir Bourmeister's production of Swan Lake is regarded by many the equal of the Bolshoi and Kirov versions. A great nephew of Tchaikovsky, Bourmeister originally choreographed his version in 1953, abandoning Drigo's revisions for his forebear's original score and instrumentation. Nevertheless, his vivid staging was neither afraid to leave out some of his great uncle's music nor change the libretto and some characters. Until now Bourmeister's Swan Lake has never been seen before on television or been available on video in this country. Next week, however, sees the release of the film of the 1992 production at the theatre of the Opera Bastille in Paris, starring Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Patrick Dupond.
