Gastric award: Dr Zhang Shansen has been awarded a certificate in Shanghai for record use of the gastroscope. In less than 18 years, he has examined 42,195 stomachs and removed objects including rings, watches and chopsticks.

Roll of honour: Antonio Teixera, a Portuguese baker, has won the 1988 grand prize for the best baguette in Paris. He is the first winner of the award not to have been born in France.
