A computerised question and answer system which enables doctors to identify toxic plants quickly when poisoning is suspected has won a British Computer Society medal. The system was developed by the National Poisons Unit at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital Trust, in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. It aims to speed up the provision of appropriate medical treatment in the 5,000 cases of suspected poisonings by plants encountered every year by accident and emergency departments in UK hospitals.
