Nico Tortorella speaks out about exploring gender identity and using they/them pronouns

‘We are ALL multidimensional dynamic creatures’

Gender identity has never been more at the vanguard of cultural discourse - and American actor Nico Tortorella has firmly established themselves as a key part of the conversation.

The Younger star stunned crowds at last week’s celebrations for the annual GLAAD awards, wearing a series of lavish gowns designed by Christian Siriano, describing the looks as “political” in a candid Instagram post in which they elaborated on their ever-evolving relationship with their gender.

“It’s no secret that my sexuality has been ever evolving, and quite recently my own gender identity and expression has been taking new flight,” they wrote.

“I have started playing with using they/them pronouns for myself and for anyone I can when it’s appropriate.

“We are ALL multidimensional dynamic creatures and as much as I understand the spectrum, the less I believe in the binary of gender, the more liberated I myself am becoming.”

In a subsequent post in which the actor can be seen posing alongside their partner Bethany Meyers, they described wearing Siriano’s designs as a “privilege”.

“It is a privilege I have for a multitude of reasons,” they wrote in the caption, “the colour of skin, my ability to pass as straight and cisgendered, my socioeconomic status, my celebrity, my location, my body, my face, my partner.”

The Scream 4 star added that this is a privilege many people who identify as transgender and non-binary might not have, dedicating their appearance at the GLAAD Awards to them.

“Last night was for every gender nonconforming transfeminine warrior beauty of all shapes and colour,” the 29-year-old wrote.

“You are valid. You are worth it. You do not deserve the constant harassment and bashing you endure on a daily basis. I see you today and everyday. I am you. I love you. I am here for you. Not just to tell you that you look beautiful but to help keep you alive.”

Tortorella also hosted GLAAD’s Rising Stars Grants Luncheon one day prior to the awards and has previously been outspoken about sexual fluidity and polyamory in their marriage to Meyers.

After 11 years of being together, the duo wed in March 2018, shunning sartorial traditions in favour of “genderblending ensembles” that amalgamated conventional feminine and masculine aesthetics.

Since making those two candid Instagram posts, Tortorella has been flooded with messages of support and praise from their followers.

“Thank you for being an example that fluidity is ok, appreciated and should be celebrated,” one person wrote.

“This makes me cry, in the best way possible,” another added.

“I love that you use your platform as a way to show gender, sexuality, socioeconomic, and love status without any hesitation.”
