A group of hotel workers bow to guests on their departure. Competition between hotels in this area of western Japan is fierce and they strive to outdo each other in displays of courtesy. Wakayama has long been a popular tourist destination because of the Kumano Trail, an important route of pilgrimage which is dotted with ancient Shinto shrines.
