Swingate Mill, three miles from Dover in Kent, has just undergone 18 months of renovation, including the installation of new gas central heating with traditional-style cast-iron radiators, new fitted bathroom and kitchen, plus quality double glazing, and a re-built main staircase.

The mill was built in the middle of the last century, and operated by wind power until it was damaged by enemy action in 1943. It was converted into a home in the Seventies. It now has a circular dining-room, three bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen/breakfast-room on the ground floor.

The 17ft 6ins diameter sitting-room is on the first floor, with a second sitting-room, 15ft in diameter, on the second floor. Outside there are lawned gardens and an open double-garage block with a loft above. Grade II listed, it is for sale for pounds 195,000 through Black Horse Agencies (01304 207099).

Pinedene, near Ponteland in Northumberland, is a large country house with a windmill attached. It has four bedrooms in the main house and three in the windmill, the two buildings joined by a corridor. The main house has three large interconnecting rooms, making up the drawing-room, sitting- room and dining area, with polished wood floors, inglenook fireplace and beamed ceilings.

There is also a large study lined with mahogany panelling, 24ft kitchen with a cream, four-oven Aga, and hand-painted cabinets, and a 34ft 10ins snooker room. The windmill has its own kitchen, sitting-room and bathroom. Outside there is a gym, triple garage, tennis court and formal gardens. It is for sale through GA for pounds 495,000 (0191 284 0488).

The Oare Windmill, a mile from Faversham in Kent (and mainline railway link to London, 70 minutes), was built for a corn dealer in 1819. It was turned into a private home in 1963. Grade II listed, the redbrick mill has been recently renovated. The first floor former "meal" room is now a 22ft sitting-room and kitchen, leading out onto a circular verandah with views across to Swale Marshes.

The spur wheel and the main wooden shaft remain in place. There are three bedrooms, one of which has huge supporting beams forming part of a canopy over the bed area. Price guide is pounds 185,000, details from Cluttons Daniel Smith (01227 457441).
