Where shall we meet?: One Ninety Queensgate, SW7

Behind a discreet and faintly intimidating entrance lurks a room whose dark oak panelling, sofas and oil paintings could easily make for a mothballed clubbiness. In fact, this comfortable mid-Atlantic bar has a decided air of fashion about it.

The men may be in shirtsleeves but they're Turnbull and Asser shirts and even the mood lighting can't conceal the glint of Rolexes on tanned media wrists.

The only danger with meeting here is that you may well enjoy yourself too much to bother with the Proms at all.

The drinks are less expensive than the clientele: wine starts at pounds 8.50 a bottle and champagne at pounds 22.50 (cheaper than the Albert Hall). Deep-fried courgettes

with anchovy mayonnaise are a necessity at pounds 2.25. Pub hours.
