Good Day for Matti Puustinen, an engineer who set a new record in Finland's second national beer-drinking championships. His time for drinking eight bottles of beer was 1min 10.36sec. A new record of 1.61sec was also set in the Small Tankard event. The competition was held in the town of Turku and passed without incident, although all contestants driving home were breathalysed by the police.

Bad Day for pink elephants, as the owner of a children's entertainment centre in North Humberside was refused planning permission to erect 11 of them on the roof. Tony Edwards is now seeking to dispose of the life- sized plastic creatures, which he bought second-hand for pounds 5,000. He now hopes that a children's charity will take them off his hands. He also has to get rid of six giant frogs and two 14-ft spacemen.
