Write a cut-price will and support nine charities

People wanting to make a will can take advantage of cut-price legal advice during November.

The scheme – from Will Aid, the legal profession-charity partnership – allows adults of any age to have a basic will drawn up by a solicitor in return for a donation.

The suggested amount is £75 for a single will, £110 for mirror wills, or £40 for a codicil or change to a previous will. Will Aid has also teamed up with Certainty, the National Will Register, so clients can register the location of their will, free (usual cost is £28.75). This enables a will to be found quickly and easily, when needed.

The usual cost of a making a will can run to hundreds of pounds.

Will Aid, which supports nine charities, including Save the Children and Age UK, hopes to reduce the number of Britons dying intestate – ie, without a will.

"Ignorance most definitely will not be bliss for those left behind when someone dies intestate," says Iain McAndrew of Will Aid. "People are not making wills because they don't believe they need to, and their lack of knowledge can cost individuals and families a small fortune, as well as a lot of stress and hardship."
