The school day would start earlier under plans drawn up by a Labour adviser.

Michael Barber, leading Labour's literacy task-force, proposes an 8am start to the secondary-school day. The morning would be given over to formal lessons, with the afternoon session devoted to "broader learning". Professor Barber is due to unveil the plan tomorrow at a conference organised by Community Service Volunteers.
