Zimbabwean troops maintained their vigil in the rock-strewn streets of Harare yesterday and some schools and factories remained shut after violent food riots earlier this week.

Police, who reported on Thursday that three people had died in the protests on Monday and Tuesday, said six people had been killed.

Some 2,275 people, including the a man alleged to have organised this week's protests, have been arrested.
