BBC defeated over `Panorama'

The BBC admitted defeat last night in its legal battle over Monday's Panorama interview with John Major. Senior executives bowed to a court order to postpone broadcasting the programme in Scotland until after local elections tomorrow. But BBC officials bitterly criticised the decision to uphold an order banning the screening of the interview until polling stations north of the border close. After the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh refused to grant leave to appeal to the Lords, they said that "with reluctance" they would broadcast the interview later this week. Page 3
