BR fares rise to be double inflation

NETWORK SouthEast travellers will feel the sharpest rises when British Rail raises fares in January by about twice the rate of inflation. Some ticket prices will rise by 9.5 per cent.

BR said the increases were necessary to compensate for the reduction in passengers caused by the recession, extra safety costs after the Clapham disaster and additional security costs caused by IRA bombing campaigns. London Transport also announced average fare increases of 8.5 per cent for buses and Tubes.
