WPP's chairman, Philip Lader, has accused some of the advertising giant's shareholders of having a "deep misunderstanding" of the £12.9m pay deal for the chief executive, Sir Martin Sorrell. Mr Lader stoked the dispute, ahead of Wednesday's shareholder vote, as he insisted the board had used its "best commercial judgement".

The Sunday Times: Vodafone faces tax attack

Vodafone faces a fresh attack over its tax affairs after an investigation by The Sunday Times revealed that the mobile phone giant paid no corporation tax in Britain last year. Vodafone countered, saying that Britain accounts for less than 4 per cent of total profits and that it paid the Exchequer about £700m in payroll and other taxes last year.

BAE Systems is preparing a fresh bid for the world's biggest fighter jet order despite India's rejection of the Eurofighter Typhoon for France's Dassault Rafale. The company, which employs 38,000 in Britain, has been working on a new bid since India chose the French fighter last January for its £12.9bn order.

Britain's banking regulator is to be handed major powers to influence the way the country's largest lenders are run as part of a reform package to be announced this week by George Osborne. The Chancellor will effectively drop the case for major reform of the UK's largest banks in a speech on Thursday.
