An automatic closed-circuit television system to improve the safety of trains is being developed in a pounds 750,000 project sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry.

The system will be able to scan the track ahead for potential hazards at level crossings and to survey overhead power lines, the inside of tunnels and the interior and exterior of carriages.

The work involves a collaboration between Molynx Holdings, which will provide closed-circuit television and intelligent monitoring expertise, and Quadrant Group, which will develop camera-mounting technology suitable for the railway environment.

The two companies will contribute 50 per cent of the cost, and the DTI will provide the remainder.
