The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, has started a two-month sabbatical, it was disclosed last night.
He began his break on Saturday with a four-week trip to Washington DC in the hope of being able to "rest, read, reflect and pray; but it will not be a holiday," said a Lambeth Palace spokesman.
The remaining weeks of his sabbatical are to be spent at Lambeth Palace and there is a possibility that he may do some work on a book.
