A helicopter pilot was killed instantly when his aircraft crashed in a field and burst into flames close to the busy M23, Surrey Police said last night. The helicopter was reported to have been circling in distress before crashing.

Mike Norris, operations director of Redhill Aerodrome-based Bristow Helicopters, confirmed that the crash had involved a Nigerian student training for his British commercial pilot's licence. Mr Norris said he was flying solo in a Robinson R22, which crashed within about two or three minutes of take-off. The cause of the accident was not known.
