Davies Resignation: Car found and three questioned

TWO MEN and a woman were arrested yesterday in connection with the robbery of former Welsh Secretary Ron Davies.

But the focus shifted last night onto whether Mr Davies resigned because he was caught out misleading the police.

It has been suggested that the Labour MP did not initially reveal that he first met a man aged about 50 at a well-known gay pick up area on Clapham Common in south London to avoid accusations of cruising for sex or trying to buy drugs.

Mr Davies said that he agreed to go for a meal at the flat belonging to the man, who was a stranger, along with two of his friends. He gave the man, who had shoulder-length dreadlocks, a lift in his car and picked up a man aged about 30 and a woman in her 20s. The Welsh MP and Scotland Yard have refused to reveal where the two other people were picked up.

Mr Davies was later mugged at knifepoint at Dray Gardens in Brixton. His car, which was stolen along with his wallet and mobile telephone, was recovered on a street in Brixton yesterday morning.

The three people arrested yesterday were questioned by detectives at Brixton police station.

However, it is understood that the suspects are not believed to be the two men and woman, responsible for the robbery.
