Death crash driver returns

The driver of a school coach in which three schoolchildren died in an accident in the Alps has turned up safe and well after going missing, Greater Manchester Police said yesterday. Jim Shaw, 43, had disappeared from his home in Droylsden, Tameside, after telling his family he was unable to cope with the tragedy.

His family received calls saying he was 200 miles away. Police mounted a nationwide search after becoming increasingly worried for his safety.

Greater Manchester Police said yesterday that Mr Shaw, who was injured in the accident in which the teenagers from St James's School, Farnworth, Bolton, died, was safe and well.

His wife Jean, 49, who last heard from her husband on Monday night, had pleaded with him to come home.

The school's headmaster David Bowes, who described Mr Shaw as a "delightful, kind, caring man" had also appealed for the driver to return to his family.

"No-one blames him for what happened," he said
