FROM TODAY, we are strengthening the second section of the Independent. The section will continue to bring together our business and sports coverage, but will be enhanced by a series of innovations.

Metro, a new page to be published each day from Monday to Thursday, will reflect what is exciting, uplifting, innovative and stylish about city life, in Britain and abroad.

The Life page, each day, will be about people and ideas, sex and emotions, children and the family, dilemmas and pleasures.

Apart from these regular features, this is how the week will work:

Monday: from today, we introduce Network, a section focused on the converging worlds of computers, telecommunications and multi-media. This takes in our coverage of home computers, previously a Friday feature. Monday also offers our start-of-the-week Arts coverage.

Tuesday will bring Media, along with media jobs, Science and Health. Our arts coverage that day focuses upon visual arts, with our unmatched guide to what's on in the galleries.

On Wednesday, we launch a new Finance and Law section, with a job marketplace for accountants and lawyers in the public as well as the private sector. Wednesday also features our acclaimed coverage of Architecture and of Theatre.

Thursday's coverage of Education will expand to provide fuller reports on issues affecting teachers, parents and students from primary school to university. Cinema reviews and listings will appear on Thursdays.

Friday is the day for our Fashion spread, with pictures, news and comment from the catwalk to the high street; an expanded Music section, on everything from pop to opera; a Pastimes page for chess, bridge, poker and games enthusiasts and The Full Picture, a new feature devoted to photo-journalism from the Independent's award-winning photographers.

These are the first of many improvements planned for the coming months. I hope you like them and I welcome your views.
