IAN JACK, editor of the Independent on Sunday since 1991, has resigned to edit the literary magazine Granta.

In a statement, Mr Jack said that he left the paper with great regret. "I am proud of its achievements as a newspaper with a distinctive quality and intelligence, and I am lucky to have worked with an enthusiastic, talented and hard-working staff. The Independent titles are a free and important voice in the British media and they need to survive. I wish them, and the people who make them, well."

Andreas Whittam Smith, chairman and founder of Newspaper Publishing plc, said: "I very much regret Ian's departure. He has been an ideal editor. He has created a newspaper which speaks with a sympathetic voice to its readers."

Mr Jack worked for the Sunday Times from 1970-86; he was associate editor of the Independent on Sunday when it launched in 1990.
