Experts warn of summer drought

Experts are warning of an intense drought in some parts of the country with rainfall levels falling well below the seasonal average nationwide. Rainfall levels for May have fallen as low as 1 per cent of seasonal average and latest figures show water levels are still below normal in reservoirs across England and Wales.

The Institute of Hydrology said rainfall levels from April 1995 to April 1996 were the fifth lowest in 228 years. The worst affected areas were the south Pennines and West Yorkshire. The Water Services Association said the only regions with normal reservoir supplies were Thames, Northumbria, Wessex, Anglian and Welsh.
