Fans get marks for good behaviour

Fans at yesterday's Euro 96 matches earned warm praise from police after the three games passed off with only six arrests out of a combined attendance of almost 100,000.

In Leeds, where Spain and Bulgaria drew 1-1, there were no arrests from a crowd of 24,006. In Manchester, where Germany defeated the Czech Republic 2-0, only two people were detained - neither for public order offences - out of a crowd of 37,300. And in Sheffield, where Denmark and Portugal drew 1-1 in front of a crowd of 34,993, just four people were arrested - and three of those were English.

At Elland Road, Leeds, Superintendent George Robinson said: "The crowd was noisy but very well behaved and there was a superb, friendly atmosphere throughout."About 1,000 officers are expected to be available for policing tonight's game between Holland and Scotland at Villa Park in Birmingham.
