PANIC broke out in the Sierra Leone capital Freetown yesterday as fighting between the local army and West African peace-keepers drew closer to the city centre. Residents said ground fighting had reached the western districts of the city.

The commander of the Ecomog peacekeeping force confirmed an offensive by his troops to evict the military junta which toppled the elected government last May.
