t The Senate trial would be likely to begin on 8 January. It could last between just a few weeks and six months. The trial could be halted almost as quickly as it begins if a simple majority of senators vote to end it.
t The presiding judge will be Chief Justice William Rehnquist.
t A small team of US Representatives, called House Managers, probably led by the House Judiciary Committee Chairman, Henry Hyde, will act as prosecutors.
t The same lawyers who argued for the President before the House Judiciary Committee will act as his defence.
t The 100 Senate members will sit throughout, without the right to speak. At the trial's conclusion they will vote guilty or not guilty.
t President Clinton will be removed if guilt is pronounced by a two- thirds majority. This would take all Republicans and at least 12 Democrats.
