The name British Rail sets out on a journey into history today.
Travellers on trains in the three regions recently franchised off - Great Western, South West Trains and London, Tilbury and Southend Trains - will find that the name BR has been replaced with the corporate marketing label National Railways. If privatisation runs its course, the title British Rail will disappear from all 250 million tickets issued annually.
