A police inspector has been charged with the rape and indecent assault of a 28-year-old woman, Scotland Yard said last night.

Geoffrey Smith, 31, an inspector based at Paddington Green police station, west London, will appear before Bow Street magistrates on 14 January. He was charged with one count of rape and one count of indecent assault on the woman at her home in north-east London on 17 April this year.
