The ITN news reporter Joan Thirkettle has died of cancer. Ms Thirkettle, 48, covered more than 1,500 stories for ITN after joining in 1974. The newsreader Trevor McDonald said: "She was never taken in, but was always scrupulously fair - the highest tribute that one can pay to a journalist."
