Gordon McMaster, the Labour MP for Paisley South, was attacked as he arrived back at his south London flat after leaving the Commons late last night.

"I felt someone coming up behind me. They pushed me and I fell," he said. "There was an iron bar sticking out of the ground and my left hand is cut through to the bone."

Mr McMaster, 37, said his assailants had not stolen anything and the police arrived and took him to Guy's Hospital.

"It just shows you that no-one's safe from crime on the street - not even an 18-stone guy like me," he said.
