Eleventh-hour talks to try and avoid next Thursday's train drivers' strike will be held on Monday. The strike in protest at a 3 per cent pay offer, which coincides with one on London Underground, is expected to cause travel chaos in the capital.

British Rail insisted its pay offer would not be increased but said negotiations could be held on productivity payments and bonuses.
