Former policeman Derek Nally yesterday ensured that the Irish presidential election would not be an all-female affair, when he won the backing of the four local authorities required for nomination under the terms of Ireland's written constitution.

The move confirmed that Mr Nally, the founder of a crime victim support group could take part in the poll on 30 October to succeed Mary Robinson as head of state. Nominations for the contest have to be lodged by noon today.
