My Week In Media: Radio 3 presenter Jez Nelson

Last week I watched...

The Apprentice (from which Lindi Mngaza was evicted). I'm sticking with it, although I feel very dirty every time I watch. It drives me mad because it's so formulaic but I am engaged with every episode. My kids are going through a phase where they're watching a lot of The Simpsons and I tend to watch about four episodes every week. I've resolved that I'm quitting Sky this week. Having constant children's TV on tap is not great. I want them to know what it's like not to have that. The only other thing I watched this week was the Liverpool-Chelsea game which was fantastic. The best bit of drama I've seen on TV for a while.

Last week I read...

Jazzwise magazine, which has just come out. It's a really good magazine. It's sort of got the approach of a modern magazine like Mojo, and is very open-minded. It embraces modernism rather than being obsessed with the past. There's a really good interview with a New York saxophonist called Tim Berne. We have our Jazz on 3 tenth anniversary programme next week and he'll be appearing in that. The last Observer Music Magazine had a piece on the 20th anniversary of acid house which was quite nostalgic for me. I kind of lived through that so it was bizarre to read about it as a piece of history. There were really vivid interviews with the key players.

Last week I listened to...

I'm a complete radio obsessive and often listen all night long. I listened to Up All Night on 5 Live. It broadcast the results of the American primaries as they were coming in. It was quite exciting, a genuine drama playing out. I think that's when radio comes into its element. Its agenda is very international and it's great at moments like that, because where else can you hear news breaking? I also listen to Late Junction on BBC Radio 3, which is a staple for me at the end of the day. Trevor Nelson has just started a soul show on Radio 2 which is really good.

Last week I surfed...

BBC Switch (www.bbc.co.uk/switch) has launched a new tool on its Sound Index. It is like a search engine that searches which music is most talked about at the moment. It's also got a facility where you can scroll though all the artists. I also looked at a jazz website called Destination Out (www.destination-out.com), which is really good at breaking news stories.
