A jet carrying Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe landed safely at Shannon airport in the Irish Republic early today after appearing to get into difficulties after take-off.

The Air Zimbabwe aircraft touched down again a few minutes after midnight following a scheduled refuelling stop at Shannon less than an hour earlier. The Boeing 707 jet - taking the president, his wife and a 30-strong party home after a 24-hour official visit to Ireland - was understood to have reported a possible engine fire warning light in its cockpit.
