David L. Bazelon, lawyer, died Washington DC 19 February, aged 83. Pioneered the application of psychiatry to criminal law and in 1954 established a new defintion of insanity as a defence. Served more than 30 years on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and was involved in several high-profile cases including Watergate.
