Piergiuseppe Beretta, businessman, died Gardone Valtrompia, Italy 10 June, aged 86. President of his family firm, Beretta SpA, one of the world's oldest gunmakers, founded in 1526, with an annual turnover last year of some pounds 80m. Designed the semi-automatic Beretta pistol made famous by the writer Ian Fleming as the weapon carried by James Bond. Berettas are used by the Italian police and were chosen in the 1980s to replace the Colt as the standard handgun of the US Army and police.
