Police in north-west Scotland are hunting a knife attacker who slashed the face of church minister during a Remembrance service in the Highland village of Scourie.

The Rev James Macpherson, 41, was leading prayers at the village war memorial just after the two-minutes' silence when he was slashed across the cheek by a man wielding a long-bladed knife, causing a wound that required 16 stitches.

He said later: "I just cannot believe what has happened. It is one of those things that could never happen in a small place like this. I'm just sorry that this person is obviously ill. I have nothing but compassion for the unfortunate man."
