An air and sea search was under way yesterday for a diver missing in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Lifeboats, diving charter boats and an RAF helicopter were looking for the man, who had only a small amount of oxygen left in his tanks when the alarm was raised.

The search started after the man's diving companion surfaced near their boat, reporting that his friend was missing. He was in a party of divers exploring wrecks of the First World War German fleet scuttled at Scapa Flow. A spokeswoman for Pentland Coastguard said hope had not been abandoned of finding him alive.
