A company in Kent, Bedfont Scientific Limited, is developing a sensor badge, worn on the lapel, which changes colour when it is impregnated with airborne nicotine and so measures the cumulative effect of passive smoking.

Called Smoke Check badges, they will cost pounds 84 for a packet of 30. Keith Stoddart, the company's sales and marketing manager, said: 'If tests are successful, and the badges do appear to work, we will start selling them in the next couple of months.'
