The first national "Go Home on Time Day" is taking place today as part of a campaign to stop people ruining their health, their happiness and their marriages by working long hours. The organisers are Parents At Work, a charity pressing for better quality, affordable child care, and PPP Healthcare, a private medical company, which have combined to campaign against long working hours.
Today was chosen because it is Midsummer's Day, with the longest daylight hours of the year, which the organisers felt was symbolic. Over the past decade, the number of people working excessively late in Britain has increased significantly and men in the United Kingdom now work the longest hours in Europe. Most cite office culture and heavy workloads following redundancies as the main reasons. Will Bennett (Section Two, page 4)
