John Smith yesterday wrote to the Prime Minister asking for a full account of events leading up to the diplomatic row between Britain and Germany over the sterling crisis.

In reply Mr Major insisted Britain was not asked by the Germans to realign on the weekend before 'Black Wednesday'.
