The Earl and Countess Spencer were granted their divorce yesterday at the end of a six-minute court hearing in Cape Town.

Lady Spencer was not in court to hear the final rites as Lord Spencer, 33, went into the witness box to declare that the marriage had broken down irretrievably.

Details of the settlement thrashed out on Monday were released after the hearing and revealed that Lady Spencer is to get a clean-break settlement of pounds 1.8m.
