After the battery-powered cordless screwdriver, the battery-powered cordless paintbrush. ICI has joined forces with a tool manufacturer to devise a decorating product intended to make the roller redundant.

The "Paintmate" system, which can be carried on the decorator's back, regulates the flow of paint from a two-litre container through a nozzle and on to a foam pad, which then applies the paint. The companies' tests suggest that the system speeds up painting, especially of ceilings, by up to 30 per cent.

ICI and its partner, Black & Decker, hope to sell 500,000 Paintmates and 1 million paint packs in the first year.
