A British Rail maintenance manager was jailed for refurbishing his home with thousands of pounds worth of goods, which he had stolen from the company depot where he worked.

Robert Morton, 42, from Crowland, near Peterborough, Lincolnshire, had transformed his modest bungalow which he callec "Morton's Lot" with the British Rail merchandise, including a bath, a sink, a lavatory, and garden fencing.

British Rail finally launched an investigation into Mr Morton's activities after he attempted to build himself an indoor swimming pool, ordering a pounds 4,000 frame as well as 350 paving slabs and strip lighting.

Detectives checked three years of requisition forms to reveal the crimes. Morton was jailed for 18 months after admitting eight theft charges and asking for 25 similar offences to be taken into consideration, involving more than pounds 13,000 of goods.
