Thomas Sutcliffe, the Independent's television critic was yesterday named the Broadcasting Writer of the Year in the What the Papers Say awards.
The award, in memory of the TV critic Peter Black, is for work "which illuminates and brings understanding to the world of broadcasting".
The judges said of Sutcliffe that "where other reviewers may be too eager to pick off some easy targets he is the person you turn to if you want to read a review of a good programme. He knows about television, appreciates and understands it".
