THE British Chess Federation will not recognise the Times World Chess Championship between Nigel Short and Garry Kasparov, it announced last night.
The federation is affiliated to the International Chess Federation (Fide), which stripped Kasparov of his title as world champion after he and Short formed the Professional Chess Association to stage a championship match which attracted more sponsorship. The BCF regards a proposed match between Jan Timman, the Dutch champion, and Anatoly Karpov, the former world champion, as the official world championship event.
